India’s network of Central Universities plays a crucial role in advancing higher education, research, innovation, and skill development across the country. According to the latest distribution, India has more than 50 Central Universities spread across various states and Union Territories, ensuring access to quality higher education in diverse regions.
Delhi Leads with the Highest Number of Central Universities
The national capital New Delhi
Delhi, hosts the largest concentration of Central Universities with seven prestigious institutions, including the University of Delhi (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), South Asian University, Central Sanskrit University, and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University.
Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh Ranks Second
Uttar Pradesh is home to six Central Universities, including some of India’s most renowned institutions such as Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), University of Allahabad, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University, and Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University.
Bihar
Bihar Emerges as a Growing Educational Hub
Bihar hosts four Central Universities: Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Nalanda University, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University. These institutions are strengthening the state’s academic landscape and promoting research-driven development.
Strong Presence Across Northeast India
Several northeastern states have significant representation in India’s Central University system.
Assam has three Central Universities, while Manipur also hosts three major institutions, including the National Sports University. Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Sikkim each have Central Universities contributing to regional educational growth.
Expanding Access to Quality Education
States such as Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal each host at least one Central University, ensuring wider geographical access to quality higher education.
